| | What Does Israel's Disengagement from The Gaza Strip Really Mean? | | By Paul Adams
BBC NewsIt all makes for a moving spectacle, but what does Israel's disengagement from the Gaza Strip really mean? There is no doubt that the scenes being played out on TV make Israelis of all political and religious complexions feel deeply uneasy. Even those who have long regarded Israel's attempt to colonise the Gaza Strip as absurd will feel intense anxiety at the sight of Jew pitted against Jew. But across a few walls and rolls of barbed wire, 1.5 million Palestinians will be looking on with a different mix of emotions. Economic freedom For Palestinian refugees - half-a-million of whom live in eight crowded camps in the Gaza Strip - there will be relief that the Settlers, the troops, the checkpoints and the watchtowers are finally going. There will be little sympathy for the plight of 8,000 Israeli settlers who moved to the Gaza Strip by choice from the Palestinians who fled or were driven from their homes in what is now Israel, in 1948. Talk of generous compensation packages will stir the frustrations of people who, almost 60 years on, have nothing but fading property deeds and the keys to homes...
| | From Crime to Destitution... The Story of a Convict! | | I would love to present my Family History in a book, but don't really know how to go about it? As it consists of a convict Ancestor, who married a full blood Aboriginal women, who travelled very widely and lived in great poverty, I thought it would be of interest. Here is a summary of it so far: FROM CRIME TO DESTITUTION The Story of a Convict I did not know I had a convict ancestor until the year 2000. What I did know was that my g-g-g-grandmother, Jane Buncer/Bonster, was married to John Lancaster and anecdotal evidence strongly suggests she was Aboriginal. In my endeavours to discover more about Jane, to no avail, I decided that learning about her husband, John, might lead me in the right direction.I could not find John Lancaster on any immigrant ship, anywhere in Australia, nor was he on the deserters record or a sailor. Just by chance I decided to look at the 1839 general muster. There I found a John Lancaster, whose age matched that of my John Lancaster. He was a convict. I was stunned and so were my family. Verification later proved the convict John Lancaster was indeed my g-g-g-grandfather.John... | |

| | Housing, Medicine, Jobs -- Chinese Dreams for 2007 | | Four years working as a white-collar worker in China's largest city of Shanghai, Liu Xiaoqiang feels he's far from being able to afford his own apartment there. He makes 5,000 yuan (640 U.S. dollars) a month as an IT engineer, but that's only half the average price for a square meter of housing in downtown Shanghai. When Liu finished college study in 2002, he had vowed to buy an apartment in three years at most so that his parents would leave their countryside home in central Hubei Province and live with him."They spent up their savings to finance my education through college while other villagers had moved into bigger houses," said Liu. "I just hope houses in Shanghai would be more affordable for home buyers like me."A recent survey made by the Shanghai government shows 33 percent of the new settlers in the city think they'd need at least10 years of hard work to buy an apartment, 32 percent said they would need six to 10 years and 20 percent said five years."If the Chinese government's macro control policy could drive down the house prices in big cities, I might make enough for the down payment of a two-bedroom apartment in a year or two," said Liuas he... | |

Bahija Sharbati, mother of Six For ten years, my family has been living in Tel-Rumeida. A road two or three meters wide separates my house from the houses of the Jewish settlers in the neighborhood. My house is surrounded by a vineyard. There is no high fence around it, so the settlers can get to my house. Over the past four years, since the outbreak of the intifada, life has been very hard for us. The settlers attack us and the army takes harsh actions[against us] to protect the settlers. Soldiers block the roads leading to our house, and we aren't even able to walk on the road on foot. As we all know, America was originally inhabited by native Indians. It is the early European immigrants and settlers that brought with them the idea to the new continent. Although some of them were eager to find a new freedom which was different from that in Europe, it was hard for them to get rid of the strong European influence.e.g, The earlist arrivals to New England, the dissenters of the Anglican church. Their quest for freedom and local autonomy embodied in The Mayflower Compact, found great resemblance to the creed of the Congregationalism in the Reformation. Second, there are a lot of evidences saying that American freedom had its prototype from Europe.e.g., John Locke ‘s theory of freedom laid the foundation of The Constitution of the United States; Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s idea of ‘Freedom, Equality and Fraternity’ ignited the flame of independence during the Ameircan revolution…Third, Europe is more than Britain and France, Geramany, Swiss also played important roles. The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter; or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the...

Stop the hate, stop the jew. Give "the vote" the the Palistinianes so the can vote to be free!========Settler kids in Hebron throw stones at Bahija Sharbati, striking her in the head and shattering her windows, 2 April 2005
To get home, we have to walk through the fields, pass by the nearby houses, and climb fences and ladders. If we have things with us, we have to carry them on our back from the DCO checkpoint to the house, which takes more...
| | Tsupasat... | | appreciate some of your points. But about the origin of freedom, I’m afraid I can’t fully agree. First, freedom did not come out of nowhere in America. Eg. The religous belief of Rebapitizers in Zwingli’s... | |
| | Muslims in America - send them back where they came from! | | I wish I could, but my parents have passed and there's no one in New Jersey I want to live near.
Yes, I am a 100% Heinz 57 variety, caucasian voting-since-I-was-18-American, born of 20th century immigrant stock on one side and 16th century Dutch settlers on the other. However I'm MUSLIM. I converted from Christianity - why? Because it preaches you to be two-faced and I was tired of it. I researched and studied for years before discovering Islam and on my own, decided to make Shahada (decree of faith) - no water dousing, no touching of hands or pouring of oils, or screams of excitement. A quiet decree to Allah (which is ARABIC for One God, NOT a separate deity) for His Forgiveness of my sins, a promise I would live each day in brotherhood to all (not just to a select few), live humbly and modestly in word and deed (including dress), and give charity to who needed it, even if it was just a smile. No man forced me to change so he could marry me, no one told me I had to be Muslim to join in the Islamic communities activites, no one pushed literature and judgement slurs down my throat uninvited. What I got were my questions answered eagerly and truthfully, and if the Muslim or...
