Air-conditionersIn recent years, the air- conditioner has become one of the many indispensable electrical appliances for thousands upon thousands of families, especially those in the south, where the intense heat overwhelms the earth throughout the summer. The advantages of the air- conditioner are self - evident. Armed with the ability to refrigerate, the air- conditioner makes you feel refreshing and comfortable no matter how hot it is outside. Thus it guarantees the efficiency of your work and the quality of your rest. Without it there would be no knowing what would happen to you in the dog days. Moreover, it can also create a proper condition in summer for the operation of computers -- the best friends of yours in the information age. Too high a temperature would make computers work improperly, causing much inconvenience for your daily life and work. With all the advantages the air- conditioner offers, its disadvantages are also obvious. | | Want some tips on how to save Gasoline for the hike in gas prices? | | If gas prices these days have become a huge part in your budget and is preventing you to travel well here's some tips on how to save.1)Drive at the speed limit or a bit slower. Driving at 120km/h burns 20 per cent more fuel than 100km/h, while dropping down to 90km/h saves another 10 per cent.2) Use cruise control to keep highway speeds constant, and keep the windows closed to reduce air friction.3)Air-conditioners can boost fuel consumption by 20 percent, so use the car's flow-through ventilation instead.4)Maintain proper tire pressure, as under-inflation wastes fuel.5)Anticipate traffic ahead to avoid sudden braking and acceleration. Fast starts and hard braking can sharply increase fuel use.6) Remove unnecessary weight- items you carry but do not use- along with non-essential addons such as roof racks that can break the air flow.7) Reduce idling.8) Paln your route to avoid heavy traffic areas, road construction and hilly terrain, if possible.9) Shift manual transmissions gently but quickly to the higher gears where the engine works more efficiently and uses less fuel.10)For automatic transmissions, use overdrive at higher speeds to...

| | Air conditioning | | Is it hot where you are? Do you use air conditioning or do you keep windows open at night and use fans? | | Cutting Costs on Cooling your Home | | With summer heat right around the corner, I have researching ideas for more economical cooling of my home. At the moment, adding insulation to my 100 year old home is not an option. Normally we pull our window unit out of storage in mid to late June, but with the heat we have experienced these past fews days, I am worried that we will have to begin using them much sooner. My budget is not ready for that extra expense. Some of the tactics we have employed in past summers are:
1. We no longer use our central air (which is a dinosaur).
2. Window units are installed only in the rooms that would be unbearable without some kind of cooling.
3. The newest window unit is a Haier Energy Star, which has a 24hr on and off timer and uses 10-50% less energy while operating.
4. The units are only allowed to be turned on while anyone is in the room. There are penalities if you leave the room for more than 30 mins without turning the unit off. So, those are some of my tips, but I am really looking forward to hearing what everyone else has to add.
| | High electric bills | | With the increase in electricity and gas bills as well as everything else my family and I are trying to find ways to cut corners to save money on these monthly expenses. One thing that we have tried is putting aluminum foil over several of the windows of our house, especially the ones that let in the most sun. Last Thursday on my husband's off day he and Amanda spent most of the day putting this on the windows in our dining room, living room, kitchen and Amanda and Stuart's bedrooms. It has already made a difference in the temperature of the house even though we have still had to use our air conditioners some, of course. We are also going to buy some floor fans to use so that we won't have to run our air conditioners as much. What kind of ideas to you have to save money on your utility bills? I'm interested to know because I may borrow some of them. Thanks!!! | |
