| Is it hot where you are? | | The past few days it has been really hot here in southern Japan. Today was 35.8C and I feel like I am going crazy. I have air conditioners but try not to use them to much because of my electric bill.
Does anybody have any good tips for cooling off?
| | How many electrical appliances do you have running in your home right now? | | This evening, as we were getting ready to go outside one last time, I walked through the back room and noticed that the window air conditioner was still on. Funny since no one was actually in the room. And, realizing that this probably wasn't an isolated waste of electricity, I did a quick mental tally of all the appliances that I was sure would be running in the house at the same time. It was not a pretty picture. At that time we had all of the following things using electricity: three window air conditioners, one fan, the kitchen exhaust fan, the bathroom exhaust fan, three light bulbs, one computer, two TVs, two DVD players, one VCR, microwave and one giant energy draining refrigerator! Good grief! No wonder our electric bill went up by $50 this past month. What a waste of money and electricity. Needless to say it was an eye-opening experience. So, how about you? How many electrical appliances are running in your home at this moment? How many appliances could you easily unplug without being inconvenienced? Could you live with just two or three energy using objects in your life and get rid of everything else? | |
| | 'Sanjay will have to work hard in jail' | | i just read a piece of news and found it hard to believe... Actor Sanjay Dutt, who has swapped the glamour of the silver screen for the harsh reality of prison, will soon have to choose between cooking, carpentry, farming or weaving for just a dollar a day.
Dutt was jailed for six years "rigorous imprisonment" on Tuesday for acquiring guns from gangsters linked to India's worst bombings in Mumbai in 1993 - less 16 months he served while awaiting trial."Rigorous imprisonment means doing labour like cooking, carpentry, farming, working on handlooms, etcetera," a jail official said, on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media."Sanjay Dutt will be treated like any other convict and he will have to work as well." Dutt has been temporarily lodged in a jail in his hometown Mumbai meant for prisoners under trial, where he is reportedly sharing a cell with two other men, but officials said he would probably be moved to a more permanent home soon.Indian jails are overcrowded, with some holding almost five times their capacity. The one Dutt is lodged in now officially has room for 800 people, but houses about 3,000.Jail sources said...
| | If you could change one thing about your house, what would it be? | | Personally, I don't like the way that my home cools in the summer. Actually, I should say that only certain rooms get cool while other rooms continue to be unbearably hot. So, that means only part of the house is usable during the hottest part of the year. So, if I had to change one thing, I'd probably rearrange the rooms so that there was a better air flow. Or, at least install central air conditioning. As is, we are limited to window air conditioners. But, that would certainly take a very large investment on my part for the upgrade. So, what would you change about your home? Would you add more rooms or subtract a few? Do you wish you had bigger windows or a better view? Would you set your house back further from the road, if you had a choice? Please share your likes and dislikes about the place you call home. | |
| | What's the next big thing you're going to have to buy? | | Our next big purchase will most likely be another window air conditioner. Our window air conditioners are acting up and don't work right. And, it's way too hot to live in this type of heat! This past week we had to buy a truck, because our car broke down and was too messed up to repair. Fortunately, we got it for next to nothing. Lucky break, I guess. So, what's the next big thing you are going to buy? Do you think you'll replace your car in the next year or two? What's the last big purchase you made? | |
| | Help! My window air conditioner is dying! | | For the past week or so, our window air conditioner has been making a horrible grating noise. Sort of like the sound you hear when someone scrapes their nails on the chalk-board. It's annoying to say the least and our child simply can't stand it. So, most times we keep our window air conditioner off in the computer room. And, that makes it unbearable to be in there working on the computer. But today, it started spitting cold water! Does anyone know why a window air conditioner would spit cold water? Is there some way to fix the noise? Or, is it just time to throw the air-conditioner to the curb and get a new one? | |
| | Necktie … | | Necktie is worn by persons around the globe. I am from India. Here too people wear pant, shirt, coat etc and usually tie a ‘neck-tie’ around the neck. I also do that while giving a lecture or attending some seminar. India is a hot country, so wearing ‘dhoti’ & ‘kurta’ is best, I wear these but on religious occasions. But now a day, very few people do that, that too mostly in villages. It is really uncomfortable to wear a coat even. Keeping the portion near the neck open gives some relief. But tying a necktie there, blocks the air.
Necktie is known as ‘kantha-langot’ in Hindi, the national language of India,. ‘Kantha’ refers to neck and ‘langot’ refers to a loin cloth that is worn by sadhus. Wearing a ‘langot’ may have certain benefits but I do not that in detail. One is, it prevents hydrocele, as it prevents the scrotum from hanging. But I am sure, if somebody pulls you towards him/her, holding the necktie you are wearing, there is every possibility of you being choked to death.
As per a report, business firms in Japan have advised their staff to reduce the wearing the coats, necktie, just to lessen the use of air conditioners, which in turn will reduce the electricity bills....
| | How often should you clean the air conditioner filter? | | Most times summers in the south are unbearable, so we end up running our window air conditioners night and day. Recently, two of our air conditioners have started acting funny and freezing up. And, I was wondering if it could have anything to do with the AC filter. I've also noticed that sometimes it's hard to breathe indoors and I'm worried that the filters could be to blame. But, I don't want to clean them too often and mess them up. Any suggestions? How often should you clean the filter for a window air conditioner? Will cleaning the filter mess up an air conditioner? | |
| | | Warranties... to extend or not? | | We have all bought some big ticket electrical items sometime in our life. Things like your fridge, television, Hi-Fi sets, Computers, heaters, ovens, air-conditioners...etc. And they all come with warranties. The standard these days is 1 year. And most of the time, the warranties only covers damages that is not due to wear and tear.Depending on where you get your electrical items from, there are some shops that offer extended warranty. An extended warranty is coverage for electrical or mechanical breakdown. It usually only cover the cost of repairing the item and may include replacement if the item is not repairable or deemed uneconomical to be sent for repairs.
These warranties extend the period of the manufacturer's standard warranty. Extended warranties cost extra and usually for a percentage of the item's retail price or some fixed price that are offered by the retail shops itself.I usually have reservations about buying warranties unless I know that I am able to use the item well beyond the standard warranty. So far, most of the items I bought are still good way beyond their extended warranties. So much so that sometimes, I feel it is redundant to buy extended...
