Man Gets 6 Years in Software Piracy Case
Danny Ferrer, of Lakeland, Florida was sentenced on Friday to six years in prison and ordered to pay over 4.1 million dollars in restitution to software authors Adobe Systems Inc., Autodesk, and Macromedia Inc. for selling counterfeit software over the internet. Ferrer's website BuyUSA.com began selling software in 2002 and ran until October of 2005 when it was shut down by the FBI. According to John Wolfe of Business Software Alliance, the software looked legitimate to consumers, but was sold at incredibly discounted prices. Profits from his sales bought Ferrer such niceties as several airplanes, a Lamborghini, a Hummer, and a fighter-jet simulator, all of which have been ordered to be sold to pay the restitution in the case. "You extended your hand into the pockets of these people," U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III said before sentencing Ferrer. "If severe penalties were not attached, people would line up from here to Los Angeles to do what you've done." Ferrer told judge Ellis that he began selling pirated software to pay for a feeding tube for his sick wife, but agreed that "there was probably a certain amount of greed." Prosecutors estimated that Ferrer's...
Is Predictability Impossible?
In general, no. There are some software developments where predictability is possible. Organizations such as NASA's space shuttle software group are a prime example of where software development can be predicted. It requires a lot of ceremony, plenty of time, a large team, and stable requirements. There are projects out there that are space shuttles. However I don't think much business software fits into that category. For this you need a different kind of process. One of the big dangers is to pretend that you can follow a predictable process when you can't. People who work on methodology are not very good at identifying boundary conditions. However letting to go predictability does't mean you have to revert to uncontrollable chaos. Instead you need a process that can give you control over an unpredictability. That's what adaptivity is all that.
Windows uses pirated software?
Windows uses pirated software?Has it ever crossed your mind to use the editor to open a WAV file installed with Windows XP? Nobody will do that - that's what Microsoft probably thought. After all, countless WAV files are stored on a computer, and they are to be heard, not to be watched, right? No, not exactly. Our colleagues over at Macwelt gave us the idea. We tried it and examined some WAV files that are stored on a drive with a newly installed Windows XP. And we made a stunning discovery. In fact, we didn't even have to search for very long, as coincidence lent us a helping hand. In the Windows system directory, we had our first find, in the directory"Windows\Help\Tours\WindowsMediaPlayer\Audio\Wav".Located there are exactly nine WAV files, with a size between 80 and 360 Kilobytes. They serve as background sound during the Windows Media Player Tour. When you open one of these files with the notepad, you at first only see scrambled letters. Of course, you think, it's a sound file, after all.But things become interesting when you scroll down to the very bottom in notepad. Located there is a type of watermarking, which records the software that the Microsoft...
Software horror stories?
Anyone got real gripes about lousy software? It's amazing how much garbage is marketed which either doesn't run, crashes computers, or destroys databases. Game software seems to be the worst, but business software can get pretty bad. We had a database running a language called Natural, which would wipe data while we did entries. Every Monday was a raffle to see whether the place was running or not. Another classic was a big name accountancy package, which just never ran. All it ever did was crash the IT section for hours. We had to keep the old system going or we just wouldn't have had any accounts. Also interested in what support you got from the provider, or lack of support.
Microsoft wants companies send them computer audit details
Microsoft wants small to medium companies to submit software audit details. If they do not microsoft, will hand their details over to the business software allience, these companies face fines over £100,000. Thay are looking at companies with about 350 licenses. (Do they not make enough from these companies) Microsoft want to look at what these companies are using and what they have licensed.

Software Piracy
In a study on global software piracy conducted by the highly reputable market research firm IDC on July, 2004 it was estimated that over $30 billion worth of software was illegally installed worldwide during the year 2003 (see the BSA and IDC Global Software Piracy Study by the Business Software Alliance and IDC[BSA1]). This means that 36 percent of the total software products installed during that period were obtained illegally. In another study, IDC estimated that “lowering piracy by 10 percentage points over four years would add more than 1 million new jobs and $400 billion in economic growth worldwide.” Keep in mind that this information comes from studies commissioned by the Business Software Alliance (BSA)—a nonprofit organization whose aim is to combat software piracy. BSA is funded partially by the U.S. government, but primarily by the world’s software giants including Adobe, Apple, IBM,Microsoft, and many others. These organizations have undoubtedly been suffering great losses due to software piracy, but these studies still seem a bit tainted in the sense that they appear to ignore certain parameters that don’t properly align with funding members’ interests. For...
Business Software Alliance (Anti piracy)
I was wondering if the Business Software Alliance (BSA) has the power to target an individual who is not part of any business or in profit making e.g. A single user using a piece of pirated software on his own personal computer, without sharing or distributing it to anyone.

Business Software Alliance (Anti piracy)
I was wondering if the Business Software Alliance (BSA) has the power to target an individual who is not part of any business or in profit making e.g. A single user using a piece of pirated software on his own personal computer, without sharing or distributing it to anyone.
