| Soriano to Cubs; Dodgers turn attention to Pierre after retaining Garciaparra | | Alfonso Soriano is focused on bringing a World Series title to Wrigley Field for the first time. Soriano's $136 million, eight-year contract was announced Monday by the Chicago Cubs after he passed a physical, the fifth-highest contract in baseball history and the first of eight years or more since Scott Rolen's deal with St. Louis in September 2002. "It's a big contract, but that's not my goal," Soriano said. "My goal is to play hard and give you a championship for the city. That's my goal. It's not about the contract." Chicago, which gave third baseman Aramis Ramirez a $75 million, five-year deal, hasn't won the World Series since 1908, when it played at the second West Side Park. In hopes of winning a championship, the Cubs are moving to the top level of baseball spenders, joining the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. General manager Jim Hendry isn't worried that Soriano, who turns 31 in January, will tail off drastically by the end of the deal. "He's lean. He's like a greyhound, this guy. He's some kind of an athlete, and that's a very, very young body for his age," Hendry said. "Who knows if somebody is going to be as productive at 38 as they... | |
| | Angels agree to terms with Gary Matthews Jr. | | ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Gary Matthews Jr. had a tough decision, choosing between the Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Giants. Family won out. Matthews, whose 7-year-old son lives in nearby Santa Monica, reached a preliminary agreement Wednesday on a $50 million, five-year contract with the Angels following a career year with the Texas Rangers. "You spend so much time away from your family when you play baseball, and no amount of money can make up for that," Matthews told The Associated Press while driving to San Jose for Thanksgiving. "This move is a way for me to accommodate my son and be around him more." Matthews' parents also live in Southern California. His father, known as "Sarge," also was a big-league outfielder, beginning his with the Giants. The younger Matthews has been called "Little Sarge." `I'm so appreciative that they gave me a chance to literally follow in my father's footsteps," Matthews said. "It would have been something just to have another Bonds and Matthews in the Giants' outfield. But this move was for my family." | | Diamondbacks trade C Estrada to Brewers for LHP Davis | | The Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday acquired catcher Johnny Estrada from the Arizona Diamondbacks for lefthanded starter Doug Davis in a six-player deal. The Brewers also received righthanders Claudio Vargas and Greg Aquino, while the Diamondbacks got lefthander Dana Eveland and minor league center fielder David Krynzel. Estrada, 30, hit .302 with 11 homers and 71 RBI in his first season with Arizona in 2006. A 2004 National League All-Star with the atlanta Braves, Estrada has a .280 average, 32 homers and 227 RBI in six major league seasons with the Diamondbacks, Braves and Philadelphia Phillies.
"Estrada has been a very good offensive catcher during his career," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said. "His ability to switch-hit and his high contact-low strikeout approach is something that the Brewers' offense has been missing." Estrada will take over the starting catcher role from 37-year-old Damian Miller, who hit .251 in 101 games and exercised his player option for 2007. Estrada became available due to the emergence of 25-year-old Chris Snyder, who hit .277 with six homers and 32 RBI in 184 at-bats. Arizona...
| | NASCAR's new champion lags in fan popularity | | There's an Internet video of a family in its kitchen watching October's last-lap wreck at Talladega. When Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson crash on the final lap, the family flies into an expletive-laden rage against Johnson. Widely viewed throughout NASCAR, it took Earnhardt and Denny Hamlin to make Johnson aware of the clip. ``That was one of the funniest videos I've ever seen,'' Hamlin told him, choking back laughter. ``Even the toddler was ripping you.'' Johnson is NASCAR's nicest guy and its newest champion, but he's far from a fan favorite. With 23 career victories and his first Nextel Cup championship, Johnson's still working on winning over fans: He ranked a distant 10th last season in final voting for NASCAR's most popular driver.
Routinely booed during pre-race introductions, he's had more than one Victory Lane celebration spoiled by debris raining down from the grandstands. Although that didn't happen Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway, he hardly was embraced. His haters didn't even bother sticking around, making the final trophy presentation somewhat muted. ``He is a genuine person, the kind that fans should embrace,'' said Atlanta...
| | | | Orioles sign RHP Baez to three-year contract | | The Baltimore Orioles have made their shaky bullpen an offseason priority. Righthander Danys Baez, who has 111 career saves, signed a three-year contract with the Orioles on Monday. The Baltimore Sun is reporting that the deal is worth $19 million.
Last week, the Orioles signed lefthanded reliever Jamie Walker to a three-year contract worth $11.5 million. Baltimore's bullpen posted a 5.25 ERA - the second-worst mark in the majors - last season. "Danys gives us a strong right arm to add to our bullpen," Orioles vice president of operations Mike Flanagan said. "We've said the bullpen was a target area for us, and this signing and last week's addition of Jamie Walker have greatly improved our ability to hold leads and get to our closer." Baez, 29, will serve as a setup man to closer Chris Ray, who had 33 saves last season. Baez was an All-Star for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2005, recording 41 saves with a 2.86 ERA. But last season, Baez was 5-6 with nine saves and a 4.53 ERA with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves. He struggled with the Dodgers, managing just nine saves in 16 chances before being traded to the Braves in late July....

Kyle Carter's emergency operation to replace childhood shunt a success

Kyle Carter, a star player on the 2006 Little League World Series championship team from Columbus, underwent successful brain surgery Friday morning.Kyle, 12, needed the emergency operation to replace his shunt, which was inserted into his head as an infant to alleviate arterial blockage and pressure in the brain, said his father, Richard Carter, the team's assistant coach.About three weeks ago, during basketball practice at Midland Middle School, Kyle collided with a teammate and "felt his shunt pop," Carter said."We didn't think anything about it," Carter said. "But then he started having headaches and, the last few days, he felt like throwing up, and those are some of the signs we've always been told that could mean there's a problem."The final indicator came Wednesday. The Northern Little League All-Stars went to Charlotte, N.C., to accept an award for being named this year's top amateur team in the South -- and Kyle wasn't excited about meeting the presenter, Atlanta Braves hero Chipper Jones."That's when we knew something was wrong," Carter...

BY MARK RICE
Staff Writer
| | Beefin up the bullpen | | Who here is glad the bullpen is getting a workin on? I know I am. I think (with probably every other Brave fan), with a better bullpen and a combo of our now seasoned players we will have a dynamite season. As an Atlanta native, I was kinda born with Braves blood in me. This has sort of made me monitor all Braves progress post World Series champs of the 90's. All you can do is hope and pray (and draft)! Let's go Bravos, who's with me?! | |
